Tell us about your musical activities: what instrument(s) you play, for how long, any ensembles you perform with, etc.

I started playing violin in 2nd grade, and have been playing ever since. I also play flute in my school’s band program. I’m not as skilled with a flute as I am with violin. I take private lessons at the Omaha Conservatory of Music. I have played in an orchestra for a camp, but not really a big one.

What is your favorite thing about playing your instrument and making music?

I love hearing the sound and ring of the violin as I play. It makes me feel like I’m floating in the clouds. I love making music for other people to hear. I love making people feel relaxed and calm with my music.

Tell us about your most memorable musical experience.

This year for our school musical, we performed “Fiddler on the Roof,” and I was the lead fiddler. I played with two other violinists, and I got to play a solo. It was such a fun experience for me and I would love to play in the show again.

Tell us about your other non-musical activities, including athletics, hobbies, etc.

I am a competitive swimmer for Swim Omaha, so I swim all year round. I love how swimming and holding up my violin both give me strength in my arms. I used to replay the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in my head while swimming because the tempo helped me keep my stroke tempo fast! I use that arm strength and endurance to help carry bags of mulch and help with other things that use muscle. I also use my strength to arm wrestle people at school! Now, I’m one of the strongest kids in my grade! As a hobby, I like to make things out of resin. It’s one of my favorite things to do in my free time if I’m not playing violin.

Why do you listen to Classical 90.7 KVNO?

I like listening to KVNO because I love hearing other kinds of music, besides violin. I have learned about so many different types of music and songs. I didn’t even know that Chopin existed before listening to KVNO. I love listening to KVNO with my family wherever we go in the car but we always listen at home because KVNO is on the radio in the kitchen 24/7!

Please explain why music is important to your nominee.

The student has been listening to (and dancing to) music since they were a little child. The music of KVNO is something that the student has heard every single day since they were very young- whether it’s classical music or movie music they have been exposed to it! We have always wanted our children to have music education and now it’s heartwarming to see this student voicing their own opinions about various music genres and composers. Just like their parents they have found certain composers and pieces that they really enjoy listening to and playing.

Tell us about your nominee’s musical activities.

The student has been playing the violin for almost 5 years. More recently they also started to play flute in school band.

As a parent it’s so exciting to watch them take ownership of their violin playing. They practice independently and do a great job conquering specific sections of certain pieces. More recently they have focused a great deal on intonation and they are really pleased with how much their work has paid off.

Briefly describe the special qualities that make your nominee a “Classical Kid.”

The student has grown up on classical music. They’ve listened to classical music their entire life and it’s now gratifying to see them utilize their knowledge to explore interests independently. It’s common for them to read about a composer on their own and relay back the inspiration behind a specific piece of music. The seed that we planted in the student years ago is finally growing wildly and it is so fun to watch.

On the way to school it’s common for me to hear these comments from the backseat: “Ooh I love this part of the piece” or “I like this Sibelius piece but not as much as Mozart’s Requiem!”

I have been encouraging the student to apply for the Classical Kids program for years but only recently did they feel that they were good enough to be considered. My husband and I are so proud of their accomplishments on their instruments but even more proud of the love they now have for classical music.

I have played the piano for 6 years. I have one recital a year. I participate in weekly music classes at Mary Our Queen Catholic School.

What is your favorite thing about playing your instrument and making music?

My favorite thing about playing the piano is that it makes me feel proud when I can play it for family and friends. It develops skills that are different than other things that I do.

Tell us about your most memorable musical experience.

My most memorable musical experience happened during my piano recital two years ago when I was doing a duet with my teacher. The recital was outdoors and during the performance, my teacher’s music blew shut and we both had to keep playing during the period that he didn’t have his music. That was a new challenge for me.

Tell us about your other non-musical activities, including athletics, hobbies, etc.

I play soccer with a team from Mary Our Queen Catholic School. I have also played on a school basketball team for two years. I have been chosen several times to read the scriptures at our school Masses. This winter, I won the competition for best speller of the 64 students in our three 4th grade classes at Mary Our Queen. I finished in the top 4 best spellers for the school for grades 4-8. I volunteer during the summers and school breaks with my grandparents at Holy Family Community Center where we make and serve lunches to the homeless. We usually serve between 100 – 130 lunches on most days. I volunteer each year on “service day” at Creighton St. John’s Church with my grandparents. My favorite hobby is playing with my dog.

Why do you listen to Classical 90.7 KVNO?

I listen to KVNO because my mother and my piano teacher want me to be familiar with classical music. It helps me recognize the names of composers who I have studied in my piano theory books.

Please explain why music is important to your nominee.

Music is important to the student because they recognize that it develops skills and talents that would otherwise not be developed. They like the idea of having unique talents and music skills that will enable them to set themselves apart from the crowd. They also understand that music brings people together and that it can be a lot of fun to perform with others. They look forward to being able to start instruction on the clarinet next year in 5th grade, and to eventually being in a high school band.

Tell us about your nominee’s musical activities.

The student started piano instruction when they were four years old. They have been with his present instructor for three years, and this May will be his 4th recital with his teacher’s music school. The student also sang with the 10:30 a.m. Mass choir at Creighton St. John’s Church for a period in early grade school, and during that time, he learned how to read vocal music.

Briefly describe the special qualities that make your nominee a “Classical Kid.”

Part of the student’s musical training has included weekly music theory instruction, including learning about various classical composers. The student’s piano teacher challenges the student each week at their lesson with rigorous exercises, and difficult music theory that, as a former piano student myself, I never had to master at the age of 10. I am continually amazed that the student stands up to the considerable performance pressure, and high expectations of their teacher, without complaining or shrinking from the challenge. The student approaches their responsibility as a student, both in school and as a piano student, with considerable maturity.

Music is the cornerstone of the student’s life, a vital channel for self-expression and emotional resilience that has shaped their identity since childhood. Beginning piano at age six and viola at nine, the student has grown up immersed in music, developing a profound connection to its expressive power. The viola, with its soulful resonance, has become their primary voice, allowing them to convey emotions—joy, longing, or introspection—that words alone cannot capture. This creative outlet has been a source of strength, helping them navigate life’s challenges with grace. Whether grappling with a demanding Bach suite or perfecting a lyrical phrase, the student’s perseverance through musical obstacles has taught them to embrace setbacks as opportunities, fostering a resilience that defines their character.

The discipline required to master their instruments has profoundly influenced the student’s personal and academic growth. Hours spent refining technique, memorizing complex passages, and honing their interpretive skills have instilled a remarkable focus and work ethic. These qualities shine in their academic achievements, where they approach challenges with the same diligence they applies to their music.

Beyond personal growth, the student views music as a bridge to connect with and uplift others. Their performances, whether in school recitals, local community events, or OAYO youth orchestra concerts, are marked by a genuine desire to share beauty of music and forge meaningful connections with audiences. For the student, each performance is an opportunity to contribute to their community, whether by inspiring a young listener or fostering a sense of togetherness.

At school, the student enriches both the orchestra and band programs. As a violist in the school orchestra, they deliver expressive performances across classical and contemporary repertoire. Their role as a percussionist in the school band highlights their rhythmic precision and adaptability.

Outside school, the student serves as a pianist at his local church, providing sensitive accompaniment that enhances worship services and complements vocalists and instrumentalists. They also contribute to church ensemble programs, playing viola in arrangements of hymns and sacred music that inspire the congregation.

The student’s talent has earned him prestigious opportunities, including selection for the 2024-2025 Middle School State Orchestra at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a distinction for Nebraska’s top young musicians. They also perform as a solo violist and in a viola-violin duet at the 2024-2025 Millard Orchestra.
