SUMMARY:THE NEGRO MOTORIST GREEN BOOK
DESCRIPTION:Stories of bravery\, innovation and creative self-determination \nThe Negro Motorist Green Book offers an immersive look at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America\, and how the annual guide served as an indispensable resource for many African Americans in the United States. The exhibition includes artifacts such as historic footage\, images and firsthand accounts to convey not only the apprehension felt by African American travelers\, but also the resilience and innovation of people fighting to live a full American existence. It will bring focus to a vibrant parallel world of African American businesses\, the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States and the important role The Green Book played in facilitating the second wave of the Great Migration. \nThe Green Book was published and distributed nationwide from 1936 until 1967\, providing African American travelers with information on restaurants\, gas stations\, department stores and other businesses that welcomed Black travelers. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” The Green Book offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nThe Negro Motorist Green Book was created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with award-winning author\, photographer and cultural documentarian Candacy Taylor\, and made possible through the generous support of Exxon Mobil Corp.

As professors in a small art department working closely with young people—many of whom are women—the curators were recently confronted with the subtle yet pervasive ways internalized misogyny manifests in everyday life. This exhibition emerges from that reckoning. \nThrough painting\, printmaking\, collage\, and mixed media\, participating artists reflect on personal experience\, cultural conditioning\, gendered expectations\, and power structures that shape identity and perception. In the current socio-political climate\, these conversations feel especially urgent. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Yellowstone Art Museum\, Remarque Print Workshop (New Mexico)\, FAR Gallery (Florida)\, and H Gallery (California). Her work has also been published in Saw Palm: Florida Literature and Art and Voyage Magazine Miami. \nCarolyn Albracht has worked as a visual art educator for twenty-five years in both formal and informal settings. She holds a B.A. in Studio Art and Psychology\, an M.A. in Museum Studies\, a K–12 Art Education endorsement\, and a Ph.D. in Education Studies. She is Professor of Art Education in the Department of Art and Design at Wayne State College and owner/director of Blue Cat Gallery & Studio in downtown Wayne\, Nebraska. Co-Commission with Children’s Theater Company and Chicago Children’s Theater. A 2024 Distinguished Play Award Winner from American Alliance for Theater and Education. \nMorris likes lots of things: doing puzzles\, painting pictures\, pretending to be an astronaut. Morris is a kid who just happens to play astronaut using a tangerine dress from his school’s dress-up box because it “reminds him of tigers\, the sun\, and his mother’s hair.” But some of his classmates think boys can’t wear dresses from the dress-up box because … well\, because they’re boys. \nAs Morris asks the jungle characters in his vibrant dreams if there is a wrong way to play astronaut\, we see the perfect wonders of how children play pretend.
