SUMMARY:THE NEGRO MOTORIST GREEN BOOK
DESCRIPTION:Stories of bravery\, innovation and creative self-determination \nThe Negro Motorist Green Book offers an immersive look at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America\, and how the annual guide served as an indispensable resource for many African Americans in the United States. The exhibition includes artifacts such as historic footage\, images and firsthand accounts to convey not only the apprehension felt by African American travelers\, but also the resilience and innovation of people fighting to live a full American existence. It will bring focus to a vibrant parallel world of African American businesses\, the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States and the important role The Green Book played in facilitating the second wave of the Great Migration. \nThe Green Book was published and distributed nationwide from 1936 until 1967\, providing African American travelers with information on restaurants\, gas stations\, department stores and other businesses that welcomed Black travelers. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” The Green Book offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nThe Negro Motorist Green Book was created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with award-winning author\, photographer and cultural documentarian Candacy Taylor\, and made possible through the generous support of Exxon Mobil Corp.

SUMMARY:Revisiting Past Exposures by Matthew Terry
DESCRIPTION:Revisiting Past Exposures is inspired by the idea that when you see a place\, an image of it is created in your mind\, and until revisiting this location\, you view it as your mind previously saw it. Sometimes\, upon returning\, you realize things aren’t quite as you remembered\, and these two sections of time don’t blend so smoothly into one another. My project attempts to recreate this experience through presenting handheld printed images aligned with modern scenes. This is an experience I feel most people can relate to. This project is equal parts final product\, preparation\, and process\, placing great significance on the time that passes between shooting the first image\, making a physical print\, and then aligning this print for the final “present day” image. \nAbout The Artist \nMatthew Terry is a Contemporary Photographer and a graduate of the Academy of Art University\, where he attained his BFA-Photography with a focus in Fine Art Photography in December of 2014. Currently located in Iowa/The Quad City area\, Matthew picked up his first film camera in 2004 at age 16\, and since then has exhibited and sold work at galleries in Rome\, San Francisco\, Minneapolis\, Colorado\, Kansas City\, Baltimore\, and more. Additionally\, seeing work published both Nationally (Iowa\, Vermont\, New York\, Atlanta) and internationally (Italy\, England).

DESCRIPTION:The exhibit\, ‘Post-War Letterpress: Harry Duncan\, Cummington Press and Abattoir Editions at UNO’\, which highlights the fine arts press books published by Duncan’s two printing presses is open through May 4\, 2026. Post-War Letterpress: Harry Duncan\, Cummington Press and Abattoir Editions at UNO shares materials from the UNO Fine Arts Press collection\, focusing on the works of Harry Duncan\, a printer\, typographer\, publisher\, and former professor at UNO. Harry Duncan (1916-1997) used a hand-press printer to create letterpress books. Born in Keokuk\, Iowa\, he founded the Cummington Press (1939-1997) in Massachusetts\, before moving the company to Iowa and later to Nebraska. As a professor of fine arts at UNO\, he began Abattoir Editions\, the UNO Fine Arts Press in 1972 and led the press until 1985. \nDuncan was called “the father of the post-World War II private-press movement” by Newsweek in 1982 and his designs were lauded by scholar Joseph Blumenthal for their “compelling and dramatic simplicity.” Duncan worked with authors such as Tennessee Williams\, Robert Lowell\, Alan Tate\, Lyn Coffin\, as well as students\, faculty and staff at UNO. \nSome of the books and woodblocks on display were collected and donated by Mary L. Richmond\, the curator of the Chapin Library at Williams College in Williamstown\, MA from 1947 to 1955. These items\, which compose the Mary L. Richmond Cummington Press Collection\, were donated by Richmond to UNO in 1977. \n  \nDuring regular hours\, Criss Library is open to the public Monday – Thursday 7AM-10PM\, Friday 7AM-5PM\, Saturday 9AM-5PM and Sunday 12PM-10PM.

SUMMARY:Shelterbelt Theatre's My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding
DESCRIPTION:Shelterbelt Theatre continues its 33rd season with the Nebraska premiere of the musical My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding. Written by David Hein and Irene Sankoff\, the Canadian duo behind the smash hit Come From Away\, My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding takes a joyful look at issues of identity\, LGBTQ+ rights\, and the changing definition of family. \nMy Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding is based on the real-life experience of composer David Hein’s mother\, Claire\, after she divorced his father in the 1990s. In the musical\, Claire moves away from Nebraska when David is ten to start a new job in Canada. She falls in love with a woman who happens to be a practicing Wiccan. As their relationship grows\, Claire embraces her sexuality and comes to terms with her Jewish identity. Meanwhile\, a grown-up David meets his own life partner. When same-sex marriage becomes legal in Canada in 2005\, weddings for both couples are planned. \nShelterbelt Theatre’s production opens on Thursday\, April 16\, 2026\, and will run through Sunday\, May 3\, 2026. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m.\, Saturdays at 2 p.m.\, and Sundays at 6 p.m.
