Fabrics of Africa: Weaving Culture and Community
February 7 @ 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Free – $10
Experience the vibrant world of African textiles through the discerning eye of exhibition curator Suzanne Gunn. Raised in the villages of Kenya, Gunn’s connection to African craftsmanship was instilled through her mother, who stimulated Gunn’s appreciation for traditional artistry. This early influence inspired Gunn’s subsequent travels across the continent, where she built lasting relationships with expert artisans and collected extraordinary textiles reflecting both cultural heritage and artistic innovation.
“In recent years, fabric production has evolved to incorporate modern and traditional techniques, showcasing the dynamic interplay between innovation and heritage. This makes an African exhibit featuring textiles especially meaningful, as it highlights the value of both approaches in shaping cultural expression.
By celebrating the artistry and stories behind these textiles, the exhibit brings attention to their historical, cultural, and ritual significance while also acknowledging their continued relevance in a modern context. This platform serves to educate and inspire, emphasizing the rich legacy and ongoing evolution of these crafts, ensuring they remain vibrant and appreciated in an ever-changing world.”
-Suzanne Gunn, Curator
The exhibition includes an interactive element for visitors, who are invited to contribute to a digital tapestry created through traditional African design elements. As each individual pattern is woven into the whole, the growing, evolving piece celebrates both African textiles and our interconnectedness.
