ARTIST STATEMENT //
“When you first learn to read and write, language looks like a jumble of lines and symbols, foreign. As you grow and learn, the symbols grow familiar and their patterns cement in your mind. All of the sudden, you’re using words and sentences to describe the world around you. Abstraction follows a similar path of development. Leaving behind the comfort of figuration, landscapes, and still lifes, the only place to go is inward. Learning to speak with abstraction, I begin painting by selectively mixing the perfect hue and choosing which brush should be its voice. I let loose and work spontaneously, giving into my inner child. Counteracting the chaos, I approach each painting with different compositional elements in mind to expand my vocabulary. Each painting is a statement in a language spoken only by me, increasing in eloquence to inform the next.”
