Skin Deep: The Art of the Tattoo
| Inspired by Huang Yan’s Chinese Shan-Shui Landscape Tattoo, this panel discussion brings together Omaha tattoo artists Dave Koenig, Chris Martini, and Johnna McCreary to explore tattooing as a dynamic and evolving art form and the creative, technical, and cultural dimensions of working in ink.
From the first spark of an idea to the final line etched into skin, panelists will provide an inside look at how artists compose for the body in motion, manipulate line and shadow with precision, and make critical decisions about color, scale, and placement. Drawing connections to photography, illustration, and fine art, they’ll reveal how tattooing transforms visual inspiration into immersive, one-of-a-kind works that live and breathe with their wearer. Beyond technique, panelists will reflect on questions of authorship, symbolism, identity, memory, and storytelling. The conversation will also touch on the evolving perception of tattooing within contemporary art and its growing recognition as both craft and fine art.
