DESCRIPTION:Join Kyle Cippera\, horticulture specialist\, for a guided walking tour of Polina Gardens\, Lauritzen Gardens’ first satellite location in Omaha’s Old Market. Explore its 150+ trees and shrubs\, 22\,000 perennials\, and four distinct garden areas\, and learn about the history of this block in the Omaha landscape and how it was transformed from a parking lot into a thriving green space. This garden was designed by world-renowned landscape designer Piet Oudolf\, in collaboration with acclaimed landscape architecture and design firm James Corner Field Operations. The tour will showcase the timeline of the garden\, from initial plans and designing to constructing and planting. Students are encouraged to bring cameras\, as we will have time for photography and self-exploration of the gardens. Please note: This tour meets at 1213 Jones Street\, Omaha\, NE. Cost: $20 | Garden members receive 20% off.

Free for garden members. \nArtist Statement \nThere are many butterflies–475 species alone in North America\, making them the second largest group in the animal kingdom\, second to beetles. And because of their numbers\, we do not see their importance. Environmentalists know that because the butterfly is so fragile\, it is an important indicator of the entire ecosystem–and that includes humans. The Xerces Society\, a butterfly preservation group\, puts it this way: “Butterflies\, since they are so conspicuous and ecologically vulnerable\, serve as excellent indicators of ecosystem health”. Dr. Paul Opler\, at the Office of Endangered Species\, states that it is not butterfly collectors who have caused the species to become endangered\, but rather housing development and urban sprawl. Most butterflies depend on a solitary plant for their food. If land is bulldozed and plants destroyed\, the butterflies disappear – forever. Study land use policies near you and be alert for habitat destruction. Ask yourself\, “How are butterflies faring in my community?”. \nAbout the Artist \nAn Omaha native\, Albert Rhea has been interested in photography since high school. His father was a wildlife photographer\, and Albert still uses some of his equipment today. He is carrying on his father’s interest in wildlife photography in his butterfly habitat series. To Albert\, wildlife photography is magical because it takes him into a universe of vibrant colors\, exquisite details and extraordinary patterns. Inspired by both tropical and Midwest botanicals\, the work reflects a lifelong creative journey and a renewed passion for watercolor painting. \nAnna has been drawing and painting for as long as she can remember\, beginning with watercolor in childhood and returning to it later in life for its simplicity and natural beauty. During the pandemic\, she was inspired to return to her brushes after a long hiatus\, beginning a series of florals rooted in the beauty and color of nature. \nHaving spent her childhood in Hawaii and her adult life in Nebraska\, Anna draws inspiration from both tropical and Midwestern landscapes.
