Art Collectors Showcase Mexican-Spanish Colonial Treasures in Omaha
March 12th, 2025
What started as a fascination for Mexican-Spanish colonial art became a deeply personal journey for Bob and Mayra Weil. Their passion led them to amass a significant collection over the years—one they now share with the Omaha community through a unique exhibition.
After relocating to Omaha to be closer to family, the Weils saw an opportunity to showcase the intricate beauty and cultural richness of their collection. Partnering with the Cathedral Arts Project, they curated an exhibition titled Saints Above and Sinners Below: Mexican and Spanish Devotional Art, now on display at the St. Cecilia Cultural Center and Gift Shop through April 20.
The couple’s connection to this art form is both cultural and spiritual. For years, their religious beliefs have deepened their appreciation for devotional art, while extensive time spent in Mexico has broadened their understanding of its significance. Their journey began about 15 years ago in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where they encountered a painting so captivating that they felt compelled to bring it home. That single piece sparked a passion that quickly grew into a vast collection, filling their home with centuries-old depictions of saints, angels, and religious iconography.
“We never set out to build a collection of this scale, but the art spoke to us in a way that we couldn’t ignore,” Bob Weil said. “Each piece tells a story, and we wanted to share that with others.”
The exhibition features artwork rich in history and deep cultural meaning within the Hispanic tradition. From religious paintings to sculptures, each piece offers a glimpse into the artistic and spiritual expressions of Mexican and Spanish heritage. To enhance the experience, an expert from the exhibit will give a talk in English on Thursday and another in Spanish on Saturday.
