Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet is a “fish tale” you can believe and delight in! He wrote it for friends to tackle simply for their own enjoyment, but, per the commissioner, it had to include variations on the composer’s own song, “The Trout.” The French Riviera was the birthplace of Poulenc’s sparkling Trio for an unusual ensemble of instruments and displays his characteristic combination of wit and humor. One of today’s hottest young creators says that her Voodoo Dolls was conceived as a “suite of dances, each one representing a different traditional children’s doll: Russian dolls, marionettes, rag dolls, Barbie, voodoo dolls… The piece is influenced by West African drumming patterns and lyrical chant motives, all of which feature highlights of improvisation within the ensemble.”
