SAMUEL BAK ART + MUSIC + LECTURE SERIES

March 21 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

”Bak & Bacon: Representing postwar angst” by Alexandra Cardon
Claire James, Paige Michaud, & Christine Beard, flutes; music by Ludwig van Beethoven

Performing music by a German composer may seem to be an ill-fitted choice for this lecture series. However, the Jewish musicians imprisoned in concentration camps across Europe during WWII continued to perform works by those considered to be the “great” German composers – including Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Mahler, and Strauss – during their incarceration, using whatever instruments they had available. In homage to those resilient musicians, Claire, Paige and Dr. Beard will perform an arrangement of Beethoven’s Trio in D Major, Op.87 masterfully scored for 2 flutes and alto flute by the Jewish American flutist (and Beard’s former teacher) Karl F. Kraber.
