UBUNTU: A Partnership with Nelson Mandela Elementary

The inaugural Connect Gallery installation celebrates the creativity of Nelson Mandela Elementary’s student scholars.

South African leader Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. I will change the world with my hope, strength, service, unity, peace, and wisdom.” These ideals and ubuntu, an ancient African word meaning “humanity to others,” serve as the school’s mantra and guided this collaboration. Together we looked at, discussed, and created art through lessons that aligned with school curriculum and referenced works from the Museum’s collection.
