Basement Jazz Company Hits All the Right Notes in Omaha
July 1st, 2025
The Basement Jazz Company is a homegrown Nebraskan jazz combo formed by a group of college friends. After studying across the country, they’ve reunited for a musical homecoming—sharing their love of jazz with the wider Omaha community. Lademi Davis, the pianist and vocalist for the Basement Jazz Company, says, “Every time I come back, it feels like there’s something new… a new opportunity for jazz musicians.”
This quintet is made up of members Eric McMullen (bassist), Nathan Swanson (drummer), Teddy Twit (trumpeter/guitarist), Hayden Johnson (saxophonist), and Lademi Davis. Originally formed in high school, the group began taking gigs around Omaha, and over time, these young performers resonated with locals as something fun and fresh. Davis notes, “With the cast of characters that we have in the band, it’s always a little bit of tomfoolery, but it’s all in good fun.”
The band finds its unique sound through the wide-ranging experience of its members, who are currently studying in New York, California, Texas, Minnesota, and Nebraska. This has resulted in each musician bringing their own flair to the group’s performances. But at the heart of the Basement Jazz Company, all is a lasting friendship that continues to shape their music every summer. Davis says, “I think our vision is just to reconnect every summer, stick around Omaha, and keep doing what we love the most.”
