Bonjour, Omaha: French Culture Finds a Home on the Prairie

May 26th, 2026

You might not expect to find French culture thriving in the middle of the Great Plains. But in Omaha, a dedicated group of language lovers, culture enthusiasts, and curious locals have been quietly building something special.

The Alliance Française d’Omaha, known locally as the AFO,  has been connecting Omahans to French language and culture for years through film nights, wine and cheese events, Bastille Day celebrations, educational panels, and more. All events are open to the public, and no French fluency is required.

“It’s not about being fluent,” says Katie Kasher, Vice President and Events Co-Chair. “It’s just hanging out with like-minded people.”

Kasher grew up in Omaha, fell in love with French in second grade, and eventually studied and lived in France for two years. When she returned home, she found community through the AFO — though she admits it took her a while to get past the front door. “I was very intimidated,” she recalls. “I didn’t think my French was good enough.” She quickly learned that the group welcomes everyone, regardless of language level.

The organization partners with local institutions like Film Streams and Miranda’s Cheese Love, and attaches to any francophone event happening in the city, from Broadway shows to opera performances. This fall, they’re partnering with the Joslyn Art Museum for a French exhibit.

Their newest venture: a first-ever cabaret. RAW AF Cabaret takes place on Sunday, May 31st from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Candlelight Lounge event space (50th & Grover). Members will perform French songs and comedy, a Lincoln Symphony musician will play a French classical piece on clarinet, and a few open spots will be left for walk-in performers in a segment called Le French Jam.

The event is free, open to the public, and features a cash bar and food for purchase. No experience, or French accent, necessary.
