Film Streams on the Green Brings Free Outdoor Movies Back to Omaha

July 9th, 2026

There’s something special about watching a movie under the stars — sharing a blanket with friends and family, enjoying a favorite film, and experiencing the magic of cinema in a community setting.

Film Streams is bringing that experience back to North Downtown Omaha with the return of Film Streams on the Green, a free outdoor movie series featuring eight films throughout the summer and fall.

The series returns for its second season at Sonny’s Builders District, an outdoor greenspace and bar located just a few blocks from the Ruth Sokolof Theater. The season opens Monday, July 20, with Cool Runnings, the beloved 1993 comedy starring John Candy as a former Olympian who coaches Jamaica’s first-ever bobsled team.

The lineup continues throughout August with a mix of music, comedy, animation, and crowd favorites, including the Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul, Legally Blonde, and The Mitchells vs. the Machines.

September brings mystery and inspiration with Knives Out, featuring Daniel Craig as a charming detective investigating a complicated family mystery, followed by the classic drama Dead Poets Society, starring Robin Williams as an English teacher who encourages his students to embrace creativity and find their own voices.

The series wraps up in October with two Halloween-season favorites: Robert Zemeckis’ dark comedy Death Becomes Her and the imaginative Roald Dahl adaptation The Witches.

Casey Logan, managing director at Film Streams, says the goal is to create an accessible community experience where audiences can enjoy everything from cult classics to family favorites.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early for movie trivia, local food trucks, and drinks from Sonny’s Builders District. Attendees can bring blankets, low-rise lawn chairs, and empty water bottles. Outside food and pets are not permitted.

Film Streams on the Green runs every other Monday through October 26. Pre-show activities begin at 6:30 p.m., with films beginning at 7 p.m.
