Nebraska Poetry Society Sees Rapid Growth, Expands Opportunities for Adult Poets

February 11th, 2025

The Nebraska Poetry Society (NPS) has emerged as one of the fastest-growing poetry organizations in the country, gaining recognition within the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS), which includes 32 member states.

According to Nathan Lachner, the performance chair for NPS, Nebraska’s chapter has seen significant expansion. “There was a lot of praise for what we’re doing in Nebraska,” Lachner said.

The organization’s growth has created more opportunities for aspiring poets, particularly adults. While Nebraska has a strong youth poetry scene, Lachner noted a lack of spaces for poets after they age out of youth programs. “We wanted to make sure those spaces still existed,” he said.

Founded in 2020, the NPS has gained traction through monthly events such as Verse & Vibes, Vocal Fry, and Resonance Beat Poetry Jam. The organization also selects a Nebraska representative for the BlackBerry Peach National Poetry Slam. This year, NPS is expanding its selection process with qualifying rounds in Omaha and Lincoln ahead of the state finals, which will be held at Joslyn Castle.
