Parks Department Plays Key Role in City’s Growing Arts Scene

When most people think of a parks and recreation department, playgrounds, sports leagues, and hiking trails probably come to mind. However, that same department in Omaha is also quietly shaping the city’s vibrant arts community.
That’s because the Omaha Arts Commission operates under the umbrella of the Omaha Parks & Recreation Department—an arrangement that may seem unconventional at first, but one that’s proving to be both practical and powerful.
Parks & Recreation Director Matthew Kalcevich, a longtime performing artist and director, is at the center of this collaboration. His connection to the arts runs deep—not only professionally but also personally. His wife is also a practicing visual artist, and together, they bring a shared creative energy that’s helping bridge the gap between art and public space.
Under Kalcevich’s leadership, Omaha has seen stronger integration between parks and public art. From sculptures and murals in community parks to expanded partnerships with local arts organizations, the blending of recreation and artistic expression is reaching more residents across more neighborhoods.
Kalcevich says this structure isn’t just about logistics but also about expanding impact. “The arts are a vital part of community life,” he said. “When we bring creativity into public spaces, we invite everyone to be part of the experience.”
That philosophy aligns with the Omaha Arts Commission’s mission to support, promote, and grow the role of the arts in civic life. And thanks to its unique home within Parks & Recreation, that mission is finding fresh momentum across the city.
