Place Is Inside, Too: A Video Experience About What Place Really Is

May 18th, 2026

The idea of place seems simple on the surface. A common interpretation connects place to setting; however, Teresa Carmody aims to look deeper into the concept, viewing it as a culmination of lived experiences and a mindset that can be revisited later in life.

Place Is Inside, Too is an artist video showing at the Joslyn Castle Carriage House that examines the idea of place as something that can also be found internally. Carmody, the writer and producer of Place Is Inside, Too, says, “I made the video after publishing my first novel, The Reconception of Marie.”

Carmody specifies that the project is not a short film, but more of an experience that audiences participate in. The video itself is a collection of archived photos and footage from Carmody’s childhood in Michigan, where she lived with her Catholic parents. The piece seeks to capture the feeling of that place in Carmody’s life.

“I’m always thinking about sentences,” says Carmody. “I’m always thinking about the sentence as a unit of construction, but I also think about the other meaning of sentence — that we’re born into this life, and we’re sentenced to the randomness of who we’re born to and the family we’re born into.”

At the end of the screening, there will be an open discussion about the piece featuring other creatives and professionals, including comic book artist Caitlin Cass, musician and composer Kafele Williams, and licensed trauma therapist Karen Marker. Each guest will discuss their experiences and interpretations of the work, as well as the thoughts it may provoke in viewers.

“I think we all have really compelling stories and experiences, and that there’s something really important and meaningful about sharing those and being vulnerable with yourself and with each other,” Carmody says.

Place Is Inside, Too will be shown at the Joslyn Castle Carriage House on Tuesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. More information can be found at joslyncastle.com.
