Playwright Charlene Donaghy Highlights Omaha in Latest Work

January 10th, 2025

Artists often find inspiration in unexpected places, and for playwright Charlene Donaghy, the connection to Omaha has become a profound source of creativity. Her latest full-length play, 4 a.m. Friends began as a simple story about friendship but evolved into a deeply relatable work that intertwines the essence of the Midwest, with Omaha taking center stage.

Set against the city’s vibrant backdrop, 4 a.m. Friends, explore themes of friendship, life’s challenges, and personal growth. Donaghy’s “Omaha whisperer,” a local collaborator, helped her infuse the play with authentic references to Omaha’s landmarks, culture, and spirit. From nostalgic moments to local talent, the production captures the heartbeat of the community.

Originally from Connecticut, Donaghy discovered her passion for storytelling as a child, staging her early works with neighborhood friends. Today, she is an accomplished playwright and educator, shaping the playwriting track in the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s MFA in Writing program since 2010. Donaghy praises Omaha’s thriving arts scene, often likening it to larger cultural hubs, and credits the city’s theater and arts community as a continuous source of inspiration.

Her connection to Omaha has deepened over the years. What started as occasional visits has grown into a commitment, with Donaghy returning up to six times a year to immerse herself in the city’s creativity and culture.

This Sunday and Monday, the Shelterbelt Theatre will launch its 2025 Before the Boards series, featuring 4 a.m. Friends’ Donaghy’s latest work alongside other productions that celebrate Omaha’s flourishing artistic community.
