Swing Into Summer: UNO Jazz Camp Hits All the Right Notes
June 4th, 2025
Get ready to swing into summer! The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s annual Jazz Camp is back, uniting the next generation of jazz musicians for a dynamic week of music, mentorship and musical growth.
Now in its 15th year in its current format, Jazz Camp continues to thrive. This year marks a milestone with record enrollment, according to Pete Madsen, UNO professor and jazz area coordinator. While no formal audition is required to register, students complete a placement process before the camp begins to ensure they’re placed in the appropriate learning environment for their skill level.
The weeklong camp is packed with rehearsals, master classes, special guest artists and performances, offering participants a comprehensive experience in jazz education.
In addition to daily instruction and ensemble work, this year’s participants will enjoy exclusive access to professional musicians and performances. Among the highlights is a recording session by “The Big Bad Bones,” the camp’s resident trombone section, who will be working on their third studio album during the week.
Jazz Camp runs from Monday, June 2, through Friday, June 6, at the Strauss Performing Arts Center on UNO’s Dodge Campus. The camp will culminate with two final concerts on Friday. One at 4:30 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m., showcasing the talent and progress of the students.
The overarching goal: to inspire students to continue developing their musical skills long after the final note is played.
