UNO’s CFAM Marks 20 Years of Art, Expression and Growth
April 15th, 2025
What began as the Municipal University of Omaha in 1908 has grown into a cornerstone of public higher education in Nebraska. Now known as the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the institution became part of the University of Nebraska system in 1968—and it hasn’t stopped evolving since.
Among its many developments is the College of Communication, Fine Arts, and Media—better known as CFAM—which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The college brings together a wide range of disciplines, including journalism, music, theater, and visual arts, and has become an integral part of UNO’s cultural and academic identity.
Michael Hilt joined UNO in 1988 as a professor in what is now the School of Communication. In 2017, he was named interim dean of CFAM and has since championed the college’s central philosophy: “The arts matter.”
As CFAM marks two decades, a series of events will honor its history and future. Celebrations throughout the year will showcase student work, recognize alumni achievements, and highlight the creative spirit that defines the college.
Melissa Berke, associate dean of CFAM, joined UNO in 1999 and has spent more than ten years in the dean’s office. She’s had a front-row seat to the college’s continued growth and evolution.
