Picky Pizza Eaters?

June 30th, 2025

Summertime means two things to me: patios and pizza. But as an easily-burnt, gluten-sensitive person, I have to enjoy both in moderation. If you’re looking for a place with excellent energy and a pizza that’s friendly to those with gluten issues, here are my Top 5 Gluten Free Pizza Places in the Omaha Metro.

Note: These are my experiences, any recommendation should be weighed against an individual’s concern for reactions to gluten or other ingredients, especially if Celiac. When ordering food at restaurants with an allergy, remember to inform your server and request any special accommodations, like changing gloves or washing prep areas. Dining at less busy hours helps the staff help you and decreases cross-contamination.

5. Timbercreek Pizza and Pub

This one’s for our West O friends, a mountain-inspired interior that makes me want to sip whiskey in the Rockies, with food that reminds me of Denver’s pizza tradition. Their diverse menu offers a very customizable pie, and there’s a patio with lots of shade!

4. Via Farina

I visit the Downtown location, especially if I’m seeing a show at the BlueBarn Theatre.

Part of the successful Maven network of restaurants and bars, Via Farina offers a wood-fired cauliflower and parmesan crust, which elevates the classic Italian toppings they offer (I had the soppressata) and makes the whole experience iconic.

3. Mama’s Pizza

I was surprised that a local tradition like Mama’s, on Saddlecreek since ‘75, had gluten-sensitive crusts. Now, I’ve been going there for years, especially when I want a drink and that college sports bar feel. Although only 10”, their crust has the perfect crunch.

2. Pizza King

An important addition from Council Bluffs, this restaurant takes the crown for the longest running (1965!) and most decadent pizza. If you crave a date night where your sweetheart gets the steak they want, and you both feel like dancing across the Bob Kerrey bridge afterwards? Look no further than this unassuming jewel in the bluffs.

 1. Vis Major

Although known for its small-but-mighty brewing operation, Vis Major is a family-friendly staple of elegance on Center Street. Their crust is exceptionally light and fluffy, and their servers have been very patient with me, as I bring large groups (usually after shows) and then request specialty pies, which always turn out delicious.

May your summer be free of tummy troubles, and full of delicious pizza.
