Officers Found About 500 Exotic Animals Housed Improperly in a Papillion Home

December 27th, 2021

OMAHA- The Nebraska Humane Society rescued about 500 exotic animals found in a Papillion home this week.

Animal Control received an anonymous tip that there were many animals held in unsanitary conditions in the Omaha suburb. Pam Wiese, a spokesperson for the Nebraska Humane Society, said officers found many cages with piles of feces in the bottom of them and around the house.

“Animal Control is wearing respirators or masks inside just to make sure that they stay healthy because the fumes are eye-wateringly bad,” she said. “The animals are unfortunately sitting in those conditions unable to get out of their own feces and their own urine.”

Animal Control took about 250 exotic birds, turtles, lizards, snakes, rabbits, and more on Monday night, and the agency came back Tuesday to find about 250 more animals. Some of them didn’t have water or food in their cages and died. It’s unclear how many there are.

“This is something that’s obviously end of year and this is pretty unexpected but the Nebraska Humane Society is up to the task,” Wiese said. “So we will be looking over all the animals, doing our best for all of them, [and] housing them appropriately.”

The Nebraska Humane Society is accepting donations at this time. One man was found in the home, but charges are still pending.
