From Cinders to Stage: Buried Phoenix is Born

July 11th, 2025

Shelterbelt Theatre has been a catalyst for new works in the Omaha area, sparking creativity and igniting ambition. In the flames of this artistry has dawned their newest play: Buried Phoenix. Buried Phoenix is an original work written by Omaha Playwright Laura Leininger-Campbell. “I started writing this in I think 2018, it’s been a long journey for this play,” says Leininger-Campbell.

Set in New York City, Buried Phoenix follows a female actor striving to establish herself in the world while working for a seasoned hat maker. Loosely based on Leininger-Campbell’s experience in New York, the story explores themes of mentorship, artistic resilience, and navigating a world without clear rules. “There’s so much joy in the [rehearsal] room right now,” Leininger-Campbell says. “Everybody comes in, and they’re ready to do the work.”

The concept of a “buried phoenix” also serves as a central metaphor. Director Amy Lane explains, “I think it’s something everyone can relate to—that there’s something you can put away, bury it… and when you’re with the people who support and love you, it will rise.”

Buried Phoenix is ultimately a story about the enduring creative spirit and its undying fire of expression.

The production runs at Shelterbelt Theatre through July 26. For tickets and more information, visit shelterbelt.org.
