Artistic and Associate Artistic Director VJ Orduña and Brandon Box-Higdem stand on stage at the Omaha Community Playhouse
A New Act Begins: Omaha Community Playhouse’s New Artistic Leadership
July 21st, 2025
As the Omaha Community Playhouse (OCP) concludes its milestone 100th season, a new era begins with fresh leadership at the helm. Following the impactful tenure of Susan Baer Collins and Alex Rodriguez, the artistic direction now passes to a new team: VJ Orduña as Artistic Director and Brandon Box-Higdem as Associate Artistic Director.
Both Orduña and Box-Higdem are no strangers to the Playhouse. “I’m from Omaha; I went to Central High School. I always saw shows at the Playhouse—I’ve always been part of a big arts family,” says Orduña. “I knew that Playhouse because art was important. And I really wanted to come home… I felt like I could do a lot of good in Omaha, and things fell into place.”
Box-Higdem, Orduña’s partner in shaping this season’s programming, brings a passion for education and outreach. After spending 16 years as an educator in Arkansas, he’s eager to connect with the next generation. “I feel like it’s important to reach out to those kids who don’t feel like they’re being heard, and to be able to offer programming that speaks to them,” he says.
A key goal for both leaders is to amplify underrepresented voices within the community. “For me, I’m really excited to reach into all of our communities and let people know: everybody has a place here,” says Orduña. “A lot of people don’t know this, but we are the largest community theatre in the country… There’s a real desire and need to lead in these conversations.”
The Playhouse will kick off its 101st season with River Bride and Grease. More information about upcoming productions and community programming is available at omahaplayhouse.com.
