American Midwest Ballet Ends 15th Season in Wonderland
April 7th, 2025
An imaginative fantasy will conclude American Midwest Ballet’s 15th anniversary season, as choreographer Kennet Oberly’s Alice in Wonderland returns to the company’s repertory this month.
This family-friendly adventure in dance first came to American Midwest Ballet twelve years ago as an opportunity. The then-burgeoning ballet company, still navigating its third season, had yet to perform an original story ballet. Artistic Director Erika Overturff approached Kennet Oberly, a renowned dancer and choreographer who’d studied at the Stuttgart Ballet in Germany. To create a fantastical ballet, he combined characters and scenes from two beloved Lewis Carrol books, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
Erin Alarcón, Ballet Master at American Midwest Ballet, performed the first principal role of her career in the original 2013 production of Oberly’s Alice in Wonderland, as the title character. She still remembers the choreographer’s lessons, and now she’s teaching Oberly’s ballet to the 2025 company of dancers.
Oberly’s ballet blends vibrant entertainment with insight into how children see the world, exploring the original story’s themes of growing up and finding one’s place in the world.
American Midwest Ballet’s Alice in Wonderland will feature the company’s 25 professional dancers and 50 young performers from the community. Performances will be held on April 12th and 13th at the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center in Council Bluffs and on April 26th and 27th at Omaha’s Orpheum Theater.
