Don Giovanni, A Film Noir Reimagining by Opera Omaha

October 18th, 2024

Opera Omaha once again invites audiences into a world of intrigue and revenge with Mozart’s timeless opera, *Don Giovanni*.

The infamous Don Giovanni, known for his charm and manipulation, navigates life without regard for the wreckage he leaves behind—whether lovers, friends, or foes. But will he finally face the consequences of his actions?

Returning conductor Judith Yan and director Kristine McIntyre bring this production to life, setting it against the atmospheric backdrop of 1930s film noir. Yan notes that the piece is more challenging to conduct than it appears, as it was written for specific performers of its time.

She calls it a near-perfect work, crafted with such precision that it feels flawless in Mozart’s execution.

The mix of shadowy visuals and Mozart’s powerful music captivates the audience, leaving a lasting impression long after the final note. Yan’s experience directing ballet, symphonies, and opera—something uncommon among conductors—gives her a unique perspective that enhances her work on *Don Giovanni*.

Excited to return to Omaha for her second time as conductor with Opera Omaha, Yan leads the production, which runs tonight and Sunday at the Orpheum Theatre. For more information, visit operaomaha.org.
