From The Good It May Do: An Art Exhibition About George and Sarah Joslyn
July 14th, 2026
Looking into the history of the people who helped shape Omaha, a new art exhibition at Joslyn Castle & Gardens celebrates the story of George and Sarah Joslyn, the philanthropists behind many of the city’s cultural institutions. From The Good It May Do is an art exhibition that explores the lives, influence, and legacy of the Joslyns.
Digging into the archives, artist Josephine Langbehn unravels the couple’s story and lasting impact through her work. “The title of the show, From The Good It May Do, came from a quote from Sarah,” Langbehn said. “When she was talking about the Joslyn Memorial being built, now the Joslyn Art Museum, she was trying to create something for the people of the city to enjoy. She commented, ‘From the happiness I may derive from the good it may do.'”
After arriving in Omaha in the late 19th century, George and Sarah Joslyn helped shape the city through their investments in the arts and cultural institutions. Featuring works ranging from black-and-white portraits of the couple to cyanotype prints depicting moments from their lives, From The Good It May Do highlights how even small acts of generosity can leave a lasting legacy. Reflecting on the exhibition, Langbehn said, “What I hope people take away from the show is that the people we surround ourselves with and the choices we make can really shape our experiences.”
From The Good It May Do opens with a reception at Joslyn Castle & Gardens on July 16. The exhibition will remain on view through Sept. 6. More information is available at joslyncastle.com.
