Johnny’s 99th Birthday Celebration: Nebraska’s Favorite Son
October 21st, 2024
Johnny Carson, an iconic American TV personality, captivated audiences for over three decades with his charm and humor, making “The Tonight Show” a late-night staple. Although born in Iowa, Carson grew up in Norfolk, earning the title of Nebraska’s “favorite son,” a nod to his humble beginnings and the pride his home state felt in his success. His impact on late-night television continues to inspire generations of entertainers.
Pat Hazell, a fellow Nebraskan and comedian, is the producer and director of “CARSON TONIGHT: Johnny’s 99th Birthday Celebration.” Hazell recalls how families tuned in to Carson right after the news, making it a regular part of their routines. He also notes that Carson helped launch the careers of many entertainers who appeared on his show.
To honor Carson’s legacy, Hazell has crafted a unique experience exclusively for Nebraska, featuring rare, never-before-seen clips from Carson’s archives.
Johnny’s 99th Birthday Celebration will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Lincoln, followed by a Thursday event in Norfolk. More information is available on the Lied Center for Performing Arts or Norfolk’s Johnny Carson Theatre websites.
