My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding: A Show Celebrating Identity
April 22nd, 2026
My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding is a musical currently taking the Shelterbelt Theatre stage. Written by the same playwrights as Come From Away, the show is an autobiographical story about the author’s mother’s coming-out journey and her subsequent wedding in Canada.
The director of My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, Mackenzie Ziekle, says, “I have tried to approach this story with a lot of truth and honesty, while also capturing the humor. That is definitely very present in the script. The title alone is very humorous.”
The characters in this show are representations of real people who were present at the wedding. One of them represents the author of the musical and provides their perspective on the story. The music in the show shifts across genres, with some numbers feeling like traditional musical theatre and others drawing from rock, blues, and many additional styles. All of these are masterfully executed by the nine-person cast.
Ziekle adds, “They’re all so funny. They crack me up every single night. And the way they are willing to jump in and do really ridiculous things that I ask them to do is amazing. I truly can’t wait for people to see what they’re putting together.”
Identity and the individual qualities that make up our personalities—are central themes throughout the show, as characters discover new and distinct aspects of themselves. Ziekle explains, “I want people to walk away feeling like it’s our differences and the things that speak to us that make us unique, and all of these things coming together, that create a really beautiful world and a beautiful community. We can be all these things, and we can also be in this together.”
My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding will run through May 3. More information can be found at shelterbelt.org.
