UNO Jazz Camp is in Full “Swing”

June 6th, 2024

The University of Nebraska at Omaha Jazz Camp and the Jim Widner Big Band have combined their efforts to bring together some of the top jazz educators and performers in the country. This big band camp is designed for enthusiastic instrumental students to learn more about jazz theory, improvisation and performance.

Jazz Camp is an annual event that students look forward to. Pete Madsen is the Jazz Studies Coordinator and Professor at UNO. He says the popularity of the camp grows each year.

The planning process for the camp each year is extensive and takes time. Luckily, Madsen has it down to a science. Jazz Camp is open to most young musicians. Every day is designed to be filled with lessons and experiences to enhance members musicianship. The goal with Jazz Camp is to not only encourage growth as a musician, but personal growth, as well.

This year’s Jazz Camp takes place on June 10-14. A professional band performs for the students each day at 1pm, those concerts are free and open to the public. There will be two final concerts on Friday, June 14 at 4:30pm and 7:30pm where the students will perform to an audience. For more information about Jazz Camp, visit their page on unomaha.edu.
