Omaha Film Festival Celebrates 20 Years
March 7th, 2025
As Hollywood’s award season winds down, film lovers in Omaha are gearing up for another major event—the Omaha Film Festival. Now in its 20th year, the festival kicks off March 11 and continues through March 16 at Aksarben Cinema, offering a diverse lineup of independent, local, and international films.
“To really sit back and think about it, it is kind of a big deal, right?” said Executive and Program Director Marc Longbrake. Since its inception, the festival has gained recognition, with Longbrake likening its growth to climbing a mountain—constantly striving for new heights. “If you are looking at the top of the mountain…to make it happen,” he added, emphasizing the dedication required to bring the festival to life each year.
In recent years, two of Longbrake’s original partners stepped away, leaving him to lead the festival alongside his current team. Despite the challenges, he remains committed to the event’s success. “I think the festival is worthy…a ton of fun with it,” he said, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to continue fostering Omaha’s film culture.
Beyond screenings, the festival offers audiences a chance to connect with the people behind the films. Attendees can expect a packed schedule of independent films and documentaries, along with insightful Q&A sessions featuring directors, producers, and actors. “One of our documentaries this year is nominated for an Oscar…eleven,” Longbrake said, highlighting the festival’s growing prestige.
Adding to the festival’s impact is the Omaha Film Festival Academy (OFF Academy), a two-day educational program that began a decade ago. The initiative gives high school and college students hands-on experience in filmmaking, guided by industry professionals.
The Omaha Film Festival, commonly referred to as OFF, continues to be a staple in the city’s arts scene. For tickets, schedules, and more information, visit omahafilmfestival.org.
