What inspires composers to write incredible music?

The answer to that question is as complex as the artists themselves and as innumerable as the number of songwriters and composers who exist. And it’s remarkable when we can glean insight into that process.

Luckily for us, pianist and filmmaker James Carson provides such insight through his feature documentary film debut, CABIN MUSIC, which will be screening this month at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater.

The documentary focuses on Carson’s journey as a composer. When he experiences a spiritual crisis, he walks away from his position as a conservatory pianist and backpacks over land from Spain to Japan. Upon his return to Northern Canada, it is through the building of a remote cabin that he is inspired to create a new form of music.

While not every composer or songwriter can claim that their path to creativity follows Carson’s, as a writer, musician, and fan of many art forms, I have encountered similarly common themes in my discussions with fellow creative spirits searching for inspiration.

One such theme is how one form of art often inspires another. In Carson’s case, his artistic creation emerges from the art of nature, construction, and discovery while traveling. For many others, the observation of a painting inspires a play, an opera that somehow weaves its way into architecture, or similar experiences.

Another common theme in discussions among artists, musicians, and writers is the importance of the space that they must occupy mentally and physically in order to be conduits of creativity. The discovery and maintenance of those spaces are often integral to the process of creation. Having a space where one can channel their work, where one can be tranquil yet curious, focused yet free, where one can listen and explore… This is often at the heart of preparing oneself for artistic expression.

For some, it’s the ritualistic lighting of a candle or retreating to a studio or room where one can “fuse with the muse.” But in Carson’s case, the building of a cabin allows him to channel a side of himself where he can create an entirely new kind of music. All that’s explored within his film is a testament to his determination and dedication to his artistry.

Hailed by The Independent Critic as a “sublime fusion of piano performance, environment, cinematography, sound recording, and film montage,” CABIN MUSIC beckons us to let it immerse every single one of our senses and find inspiration within unique and transcendent spaces, even if we must create those spaces ourselves.
