Primary Trust Explores Human Connection at Bluebarn Theatre
March 30th, 2026
The Bluebarn Theatre’s latest production, Primary Trust, invites audiences to reflect on the meaning of trust, friendship and self-discovery through an intimate, character-driven story.
Directed by Kathy Tyree, the 80-minute play—performed without intermission—follows Kenneth, a 38-year-old man recounting his life through a series of memories. As Kenneth guides audiences through his past, they are introduced to his best friend Bert and a range of characters who shape his journey.
“It’s a story about friendship, about love, about trust,” Tyree said. “Kenneth shows us what happens when you take all of your lived experience—good, bad or otherwise—and choose to prioritize and trust yourself.”
The production features a small but versatile cast of five actors portraying 26 roles. Brendan Brown stars as Kenneth, alongside Ray Cordell III as Bert. Other cast members take on multiple characters, highlighting the play’s dynamic and imaginative staging.
Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ebony Booth, Primary Trust balances humor with deeper themes of trauma, healing and personal growth. Tyree emphasized that the play’s message centers on human connection and the power of being seen.
“One of the main takeaways is recognizing what can happen when we take the time to truly see and accept people,” she said. “There are moments when small acts of acknowledgment change Kenneth’s entire perspective.”
Tyree described the production process as deeply meaningful, praising the cast and creative team for their commitment to bringing the story to life.
“This is one I will cherish for quite some time,” she said.
Primary Trust runs through April 19 at the Bluebarn Theatre. Showtimes and additional information are available at bluebarn.org.
