PTP- Cozy Mysteries for People Who Don’t Like to Sweat
February 26th, 2026
I have a personal rule against watching anything that makes me sweat. While some viewers chase the adrenaline rush of horror films and high-stakes thrillers, I prefer a mystery that lets me keep my pulse steady and my blanket firmly in place.
That’s the spirit behind this week’s Pass the Popcorn segment on KVNO’s Arts Today.
There’s a psychological explanation for the popularity of scary movies and suspenseful television. They offer a controlled dose of danger, a surge of adrenaline and endorphins without any real-world consequences. But for some of us, even fictional peril feels like too much. That doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy a good puzzle. It just means we prefer our mysteries served with warmth, wit, and maybe a cup of tea.
If you’re looking for a low-stakes whodunit to enjoy from the comfort of your couch, here are three cozy favorites.
Only Murders in the Building
One of Hulu’s biggest hits, Only Murders in the Building may sound ominous, but it’s anything but grim. Created by and starring Steve Martin, the series pairs him with Martin Short and Selena Gomez as three true crime–obsessed neighbors in a glamorous Upper West Side apartment building.
When a suspicious death occurs in their building, the trio launches a podcast to investigate. What follows is less nail-biting thriller and more smart, character-driven comedy. The chemistry between the leads is sharp and playful, and the show balances mystery with heart. It’s suspense you can smile through.
Maigret
For fans of classic detective stories, Chief Inspector Jules Maigret offers a slower, more contemplative approach to crime-solving. The beloved character created by novelist Georges Simenon has appeared in many adaptations over the years. A standout version is the 2016 ITV series starring Rowan Atkinson.
Set in mid-20th-century Paris, these feature-length episodes unfold patiently, focusing on atmosphere and psychology rather than shock value. The pace is deliberate, the tone restrained, and the mysteries deeply human. Various adaptations are available on streaming platforms including Amazon and BritBox, making it easy to dip into this quietly compelling world.
The Thursday Murder Club
Based on the bestselling novels, The Thursday Murder Club brings together a group of retirees who spend their free time solving cold cases for fun. When real danger creeps into their own retirement community, their hobby becomes something more urgent.
Directed by Chris Columbus and featuring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley, the film leans into charm and camaraderie. There’s more tea and gentle banter than graphic crime scenes, and the tone remains warm even as the plot twists unfold.
As we ride out the rest of winter here in the Midwest, Pass the Popcorn encourages you to curl up with a hot drink and indulge in a little low-stakes crime. You can enjoy the mystery without the stress.
Because not every good story has to raise your blood pressure.
