Schubert’s Chamber Masterpieces By ‘OCMS’
May 6th, 2025
The timeless music of Franz Schubert will once again echo through the halls of the Omaha Conservatory of Music as the Omaha Chamber Music Society presents the third concert of its 2025 Heritage Series.
Set for Tuesday, May 6, at 7 p.m., the performance pays tribute to the Austrian composer with a program devoted entirely to two of his celebrated works: the rarely performed Arpeggione Sonata and the luminous Quintet in C Major for Two Violins, Viola, and Two Cellos.
Thomas Kluge, principal viola of the Omaha Symphony and music director for the concert, calls the Quintet in C Major one of Schubert’s most emotionally profound and technically demanding compositions.
“This is one of his most powerful works,” Kluge said. “And for performers, it’s one of the most challenging I’ve ever played.”
Composed in the final months of Schubert’s life, the quintet reflects the composer’s declining health with a sense of urgency and introspection. The result is a work rich in lyrical beauty and emotional depth—qualities that continue to resonate with audiences nearly two centuries later.
Kluge also praised the ongoing partnership between the Heritage Series and the Omaha Conservatory of Music, noting it brings high-level chamber music to a community-focused venue.
