Sofia’s Play Garden: A Space to Be Curious, Creative, and Carefree
July 14th, 2025
Sofia’s Play Garden is Lauritzen Gardens’ newest attraction, blending exploration, imagination, and sensory discovery in a garden that offers beauty for all ages. From plant life budding around every corner to architecture that goes beyond mere education, this garden aims to enthrall all who enter its enchanting environment.
Victoria Schoell-Schafer, chief operating officer of Lauritzen Gardens, says, “The design intent was a space for all ages… where it can be a beautiful space, an active space, or a relaxing space.”
There is detail down to the centimeter, reflecting the great care that went into this garden’s creation. Etchings in the concrete, grand sculptures that chime, and brickwork that connects to the founding of Omaha itself help bring the space to life. “It’s the details that bring people back for more discovery, [and] as you go through the seasons, the details will show in different ways,” says Schoell-Schafer.
Consisting of eight different themed areas, each one is designed to engage a different aspect of sensory learning—musical, tactile, visual, and more. With a wide range of ways to interact, Sofia’s Play Garden offers something for everyone to enjoy.
Schoell-Schafer concludes, “I want people to come back feeling refreshed, little, and happier.”
