Barron Ryan is returning to Omaha, but this time, he’s not coming alone. He’s bringing his first and greatest musical influence—his father, Donald.

From a home filled with music to concert halls across the country, the father-son piano duo has built a reputation for their dynamic performances. Blending beloved classics with original compositions, their concerts are a celebration of artistry, heritage, and the joy of making music together.

The duo, known professionally as Ryan & Ryan, are performing April 3 for Vesper Concerts 36th season. The pair will be playing selections from their program, Kickin’ the Clouds Away. Ryan & Ryan enjoy playing music with rhythm and groove, such as funk or ragtime. Their program highlights many works from composer George Gershwin.

“It features music that we love that that brings us joy and that we found brings audiences joy as well,” Ryan said.

Ryan & Ryan perform with two pianos facing each other, ensuring that audience members can watch them as they play. Similar to a classical recital, the duo take time between each piece to explain their next selection.

“We also speak about what we’re playing in between as well, so that you have some sort of connection to what we’re playing, even if you’ve never heard it before,” Ryan said.

While both musicians practice solo careers, the two have been performing as duo Ryan and Ryan for 16 years. Donald began teaching Barron piano at the age of four. While the two played together often at home, it wasn’t until Barron’s highschool received a new concert grand piano that the two performed in public. The pair were asked to play for the inaugural concert of the piano and saw potential in performing together professionally.

Ryan & Ryan’s strong educational background in music helps to propel their performances. Donald has multiple degrees in music and has both been inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and recognized as a Steinway artist. Barron is an experienced soloist and composer who was regarded one of the ‘top ten innovators to watch’ by Smithsonian Maganize in 2021.

Ryan & Ryan’s Vesper Concerts performance is set to begin at 7 pm at the Presbyterian Church of the Cross located at 1517 S 114th Street. The concert is free to attend and open to the public.

“I know I’m thrilled to come back because it was such fun the first time that now I get to share it with my dad,” Ryan said. “I know there are people who were there the first time who I hope to see again, and then I hope to see some new people as well, and to enjoy good music together.”
