Voices of Omaha Continues Free Holiday Tradition

November 22nd, 2024

Voices of Omaha has been a cornerstone of the city’s holiday celebrations, performing Handel’s *Messiah* as a free gift to the community since its debut on Dec. 14, 1969, at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Supported by member dues, fundraisers, and contributions from organizations such as the Nebraska Arts Council and Omaha Community Foundation, the annual performance remains accessible to all, continuing its legacy of sharing music without cost.

Soprano Sharon Strove, a charter member who has sung in every concert since the first, vividly remembers the view from the risers during that inaugural performance. For Strove, each year feels like a new experience. She finds fresh inspiration in the music, the audience, and the energy of the event.

“It’s not just about revisiting *Messiah*,” Strove said. “It’s about rediscovering its timeless beauty and emotional depth with every performance.”

With the same enthusiasm she brought over 50 years ago, Strove and the entire team prepare annually for the event, which has become a cherished tradition for many in Omaha.

Voices of Omaha will present this year’s performance of Handel’s *Messiah* at the Holland Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 3 p.m. KVNO will record the concert for a special broadcast on Christmas Eve, bringing the sounds of the season to listeners at home.
