My Top Five M’s Pub Faves

November 20th, 2024

While discussing the anniversary of the devastating fire and triumphant reopening of M’s Pub on a recent Dish Omaha, I got hungry and nostalgic. Researching the segment deliciously steered me to revisit the restaurant, its menu, and many of my go-to’s.

Here are my Five Faves:

1. Lavosh: A signature starter on the M’s menu for decades, my favorite is the Bacon Cheeseburger.  Pre-fire, it was an off-menu employee favorite, rumored to taste (in the best possible way) like a McDonald’s cheeseburger. Bingo. After reopening in 2017 post-fire, the Bacon Cheeseburger made its way to the permanent menu. All eight of M’s lavoshes begin with a crispy Armenian cracker, in a large half circle, and end with Havarti cheese. The Bacon Cheeseburger boasts bacon, seasoned ground beef, red onion, tomatoes, cheddar, M’s secret sauce and diced pickles. Cheeseburger meets a crispy cracker pizza? Yes, please!

2. Greek sandwich: it’s hard for me not to order this sandwich every time I go to M’s. It is like a flavor packed chicken salad, but it’s super fine in texture and made with ground turkey. It’s mixed with walnuts, mayo and lemon, and is served on crustless whole wheat bread, cut in fourths like a tea sandwich. The flavor is unmatched. Optionally, you can have it toasted and served with alfalfa sprouts and avocado. Either way, it’s fantastic.

3. Escargot: I had this dish for the first time when I was in high school, before I even knew what escargot was. My mom tricked me into it. Of course I loved it, because it’s baked in scads of butter, seasonings and Havarti cheese. If you’ve never had escargot, this is the way to do it, trust me. It was really kind of like a gateway food for me. Once I knew I had survived (and loved) eating snails, I got the courage as a young adult to try all kinds of food. Thanks, Mom!

4. Omaha grill sandwich: You might be surprised to find a simple roast beef sandwich on this list, but often, the best food is simple. A grilled sandwich with lean roast beef, red onion, and provolone cheese with a side of creamy horseradish dip, that’s just the right thickness and tanginess. My coastal friends often inquire before they come back to visit to make sure it’s still on the menu.

5. Sour cream pound cake: for too long, I overlooked the desserts at M’s. Meaning, I didn’t order them because I’m not a big dessert person. This one, however, is special for its richness, flavor punch and mmmmm factor. A perfect slice of pound cake, with a rum glaze and whipped cream. Heaven, and a perfect ending to–well, anything.

Bonus dish I must mention: Buffalo chicken soup, on the regular menu every Monday. It’s creamy but not heavy, and just the right amount of spicy in a buffalo flavor base with diced chicken and blue cheese. This dish won the VNA Art and Soup competition years ago for good reason, and has been a regular staple ever since. Who knew Mondays could be so fantastic?
