Asking For It: Group Exhibition Opening Reception

“Asking For It” is a curated group exhibition that explores themes of internalized misogyny and patriarchy through the voices of contemporary artists. As professors in a small art department working closely with young people—many of whom are women—the curators were recently confronted with the subtle yet pervasive ways internalized misogyny manifests in everyday life. This exhibition emerges from that reckoning.

Through painting, printmaking, collage, and mixed media, participating artists reflect on personal experience, cultural conditioning, gendered expectations, and power structures that shape identity and perception. In the current socio-political climate, these conversations feel especially urgent. As artists and educators who have navigated their own experiences as women socialized in a patriarchal society, the curators seek to foster awareness, dialogue, and reflection—inviting viewers to consider how these systems operate both externally and internally.
