That Beethoven was a piano virtuoso is certainly evident in his Opus 12 Sonata, which gives the instrument extra prominence; but the violin gets its due, too, especially in the expressive Adagio. Dvořák’s beloved “Dumky” Trio was completed shortly before he left his native Bohemia for the “New World.” “Dumky” refers to folksongs that appear in the work’s six movements, each with its own musical personality. The Trio was wildly successful, and the composer and two colleagues took it on a 40-stop concert tour!
