August 12th, 2024

In a previous segment of *Arts Today*, Amy Ryan, now the former executive director of Benson Theater, shared her journey from journalist and social activist to entrepreneur. She spoke about her mission to create a community space that supports artists facing challenges.

Reopening the Benson Theater was no easy feat. What began as a $2 million project quickly ballooned to nearly $7 million, reflecting the immense challenges she faced. Despite the obstacles, Ryan’s passion for her work was driven by her belief that Omaha is the ideal place for social change.

Ryan sees the Benson Theater as a model for communities in Omaha and beyond, offering widespread benefits. She believes that the efforts of dedicated individuals, like her team at the theater, are just as vital as community support in creating new opportunities.

Amy Ryan has passed the torch to new leadership after a long journey and three successful years at the helm. She is now returning to her art and spending more time with her family.
