The Vocal Colors of Chopin

September 2nd, 2025

Music is just one of many aspects of creativity, expression, and unity that is used within various cultures around the world as both a means of entertainment and pride. Many cultures boast their own colorful and distinctive musical styles, adding to the rich tapestry of music that anyone across the globe can enjoy. The Omaha Polish Heritage Society in partnership with the Polish Home Omaha are hosting The Intimate Chopin: Works for Piano and Voice Concert this Wednesday.

“My understanding is that Chopin’s vocal music is not widely known,” Zagozda said. “So, I think this is an opportunity for people to hear some of Chopin’s compositions that are rarely heard.”

The concert is part of a larger Midwest tour celebrating the works of Frederic Chopin. The concert features Pianist Dr. Damon Stevens, Simpson College Director of Opera, and Soprano Ania Helwing in a performance of Chopin’s works in their native Polish language. The concert will include a variety of Chopin’s lesser-known vocal pieces, many of which center around Polish culture, poetry, folklore, and more. After a brief introduction by Dr. Stevens explaining the significance of these pieces, the performance will begin.

Alongside these vocal pieces, Dr. Stevens will also be performing three solo piano pieces by Chopin. After the performance, Dr. Stevens and Helwing will join guests to mingle and answer questions. Refreshments will be available for guests, including Polish adult beverages.

The concert will take place at The Polish Home’s Belvedere Hall in Papillion, located at 201 East 1st St. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7 p.m.
