Shelterbelt Theatre Presents My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding
Shelterbelt Theatre continues its 33rd season with the Nebraska premiere of the musical My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding. Written by David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the Canadian duo behind the smash hit Come From Away, My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding takes a joyful look at issues of identity, LGBTQ+ rights, and the changing definition of family.

My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding is based on the real-life experience of composer David Hein’s mother, Claire, after she divorced his father in the 1990s. In the musical, Claire moves away from Nebraska when David is ten to start a new job in Canada. She falls in love with a woman who happens to be a practicing Wiccan. As their relationship grows, Claire embraces her sexuality and comes to terms with her Jewish identity. Meanwhile, a grown-up David meets his own life partner. When same-sex marriage becomes legal in Canada in 2005, weddings for both couples are planned.

Shelterbelt Theatre’s production opens on Thursday, April 16, 2026, and will run through Sunday, May 3, 2026. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m., and Sundays at 6 p.m.
