40th Annual Flower Festival at St. Cecelia’s Cathedral
January 25 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
The Cathedral Arts Project of Omaha (CAP) presents its annual Flower Festival, the centerpiece event of its Fortieth Anniversary season, on the weekend of Friday, January 24, through Sunday, January 26, at Saint Cecilia Cathedral, 701 North 40th Street, Omaha. Festival hours on Saturday (10:00 am – 5:00 pm) and Sunday (12 noon – 5:00 pm) are free and open to the public. Attendees can see the show early and with fewer visitors at the ticketed Candlelight Preview night, which includes a dessert reception, on Friday, January 24, 7:00 – 9:00 pm. For tickets, please call CAP at 402-551-4888.
This year’s Flower Festival is based on the theme “Let There Be Light,” and brings together the aesthetic genius of over a dozen local floral designers in displays filling the landmark cathedral with fresh-cut flowers. A Midlands winter tradition now in its fortieth year, the Festival provides a splendid antidote to the cold and dark of this flowerless season. Curated by Omaha artist James Pierson, the Festival theme allows the professional designers to explore a wide range of aesthetic, symbolic, and spiritual responses to the visible and conceptual aspects of light.
“Cathedral Arts Project is exceptionally proud to offer one of Nebraska’s best-attended and most beloved arts events,” CAP President Judy Kennedy remarked. “Since the first Festival in 1985, Saint Cecilia Cathedral has become synonymous with events which feed the mind and spirit and which express our commitment to the transcendental values of beauty, truth, and goodness.”
Alongside the main floral displays, the Arts Project also presents “Light and Glass,” a show of work by outstanding glass artists based on this year’s Festival theme. The show is open during the Flower Festival and runs through February 23 in CAP’s professional art gallery at the Cathedral Cultural Center (immediately behind the church), with many pieces available for sale.
This year’s festival is dedicated to the memory of Brother William Woeger, founder of Cathedral Arts Project and the Flower Festival, who died in December. It also honors the early members of the organization’s board of trustees, who partnered with Brother William to offer excellent, free visual and performing arts events to the Omaha area and beyond.
